Kingfisher-4 Oil Exploration — ESIA & audit
Client: CNOOC Uganda Limited
Location: albertine graben, hoima district, uganda
The challenge
Oil and gas exploration in the albertine graben targets ecologically sensitive lake-basin habitats with high biodiversity and groundwater resources. Drilling operations risk water contamination, spill incidents, and ecosystem disruption. Rigorous baseline esia and post-drilling compliance audit required for regulatory approval.
Our role
Earth partners conducted baseline environmental and social impact assessment and post-drilling compliance verification.
What we delivered
Pre-drilling phase: - Ecological impact modeling: biodiversity baseline; sensitive habitat mapping; drilling impact scenarios - Groundwater assessment: aquifer characterization; depth to water table; contamination vulnerability - baseline environmental survey: water quality, soil, air quality benchmarks - Community consultation: affected persons identification; livelihood baseline; grievance mechanism design - esia report: nema submission; compliance with petroleum regulations
Post-drilling phase: - waste management audit: drilling mud/cuttings handling; waste segregation; disposal verification - Groundwater monitoring: aquifer water quality post-drilling; contamination detection - Spill contingency audit: spill response equipment; preparedness; incident records - Environmental management plan (emp): long-term monitoring framework; adaptive management
Key results
✓ nema environmental clearance obtained
✓ baseline ecological data established
✓ post-drilling compliance verified
✓ community grievance mechanism operational
Technical focus
Ecological sensitivity: - lake basin habitats: fish breeding grounds; migratory bird stopover - wetlands: 400 hectares adjacent to drilling sites - forest reserves: 200 hectares within 10 km radius
Drilling risks assessed: - waste mud volumes: 200–400 barrels per well - groundwater contamination: casing integrity monitoring - spill scenarios: contingency planning for 100-barrel releases
